Old Nick can't help them with the sort of pictures they are looking for; there has been a police raid. Still, his neighbourhood is on the up and up, and now it is almost respectable: “He says that a woman will look round now if she's looking out of a window and someone takes advantage. In the old days, she wouldn't.”

Old Nick has some little spiels about walking in thick London fog to encourage unconscious guidance, trying to light cigarettes by will power, and rigging up a camera to scare away a demon by taking its photograph. He also has a familiar in the form of a pet mouse called Death Posture, or D.P. for short. Blakeston and Spare seem to have worn each other down a little, if their fictionalised chats are anything to go by, but at least ‘Magicians in London’ ends on a conciliatory note:

“Come back one day,” he invited, “and I'll show you all your future in a vision on the wall. You'll like that, won't you? All your future spread out like a map before you… Yes, do come back. I think D.P. has taken a fancy to you.”
